Anniversary Auction #300 Four Generations of numismatic and art Trade In 1878, Otto Helbig, the great-grandfather of the current proprietress of the company Gerhard Hirsch Nachfolger, Dr. Francisca Bernheimer, founded the company Otto Helbig for numismatic. While the first auctions offered coins and medals from the reign of various emperors, the business quickly grew to include many well known collections. Otto Helbig’s nephews, Heinrich and Moritz Hirsch, the latter being the grandfather of the current proprietress, joined their uncle in 1900. Due to the sudden death of Moritz Hirsch, Heinrich was made sole proprietor of the company Otto Helbig until 1932. At this time the son of Moritz, Gerhard Hirsch, was made part proprietor of the company after joining the company in 1922. The following years proved to be trying times for the company and the family Hirsch due to the terror of the Nazi regime. The political and social realities made it impossible for Gerhard Hirsch to continue his work, which he was not able to take up again until 1953. On October 6th of this year the first auction was held, with 131 more to follow until the passing of Mr. Hirsch in 1982. Since his passing, the proprietorship has been in the hands of his niece, Dr. Francisca Bernheimer. more... Since his passing, the proprietorship has been in the hands of his niece, Dr. Francisca Bernheimer. On May 10th 1864, Lehmann Bernheimer opened a store in Munich for the sale of clothing fabrics. The company founded by the great-grandfather of Dr. Francisca Bernheimer quickly grew to become a nationally and internationally renowned business for decorative fabrics, fine carpets, furniture and antiques. The success of the company was also in large part due to the efforts of the three sons of Mr. Bernheimer, Max, Ernst, and Otto. Having been forced into exile by the Nazi regime, Otto Bernheimer returned from exile in Venezuela in 1945 to rebuild the Bernheimer company. This grandfather of Dr. Francisca Bernheimer led the company with great success until his death in 1960. His son, Dr. Ludwig Bernheimer, took over the company until his passing in 1967. His daughter Dr. Francisca Bernheimer bridges the traditions of the two families. Since 1987, the company Gerhard Hirsch Nachfolger offers auctions for coins and medals as well as antique and pre-Columbian artworks. less... |
